Sustainability

Worldwide concerns about timber harvesting in natural forests, backed by state, regional and international prohibitions on the logging and trade of restricted species, make legal and sustainable sourcing of such wood increasingly difficult. As the FAO’s journal of forestry has stated, “as the sustainable supply of teak from natural forests diminishes and the demand continues to increase, the general trend in the future of teak growing will be towards increasing production and utilization of plantation-grown teak.”

Futuro Forestal has taken sustainable timber growing even a step further beyond pure stands of teak. The native species we use guarantee a natural forest which comes close to primary forests because of the native tree species stimulating a high biodiversity. Special conservation and protection areas in our plantations also promote the diversity. Our proven business model shows more natural vegetation  such as orchids and bromelias, a healthier soil, clear water, hundreds of bird species, sloths, monkeys and even crocodiles.

Most of our reforested lands were previously used for extensive cattle ranching activities and have been either abused or were abandoned and left fallow by local farmers.

At the same time, market demand for timber certified as sourced from sustainably managed forests continues to outstrip supply. This is particularly the case for certified timber that garners the best price premiums worldwide, especially for tropical wood.

Futuro Forestal has established market relations with high-end wood product producers (such as Floorworks Int. Ltd. in Canada) which pay a premium price for Futuro Forestal sourced timber.
